A special Coast Guard unit in Haines for the next few weeks is inviting the public to visit its boats at the Small Boat Harbor on Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Los Angeles/Long Beach is in Haines conducting “ports, waterways and coastal security missions.” The unit and its boats and equipment arrived in Juneau June 3 via a U.S. Air Force C-5 Galaxy airlifter plane. It is basing out of Haines for a few weeks, supporting cruise ship security.

The crew invites the public and especially youth who are interested in learning more about a career with the Coast Guard to visit Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at their two Coast Guard boats docked at the Small Boat Harbor.

There are 12 Maritime Safety and Security Teams in the U.S. that deploy across the country for various security missions.
