Public radio station KHNS is seeking changes to its rental arrangement at the Chilkat Center.

The station currently manages the building in lieu of paying rent. The station is asking the Haines Borough to assume janitorial responsibilities and to collect rents in the building.

Station manager Kay Clements this week declined comment on whether KHNS is asking to receive rent free under a new arrangement, although a recent letter to the borough suggests it is.

“KHNS has benefited greatly from the use of the facilities at the Chilkat Center, rent-free for the last six years. This recognition of its unique role in the community is now even more necessary given the cuts in both KHNS’ federal and state grants,” Clements wrote in a letter to borough manager Mark Earnest.

Clements noted that the municipality of Skagway provides the station with studio and antenna space.

In her letter, Clements also said the borough could “realize significantly more revenues from use of the center” if “a dedicated, full or part-time person, with skills in event planning or tourism related activities” promoted the use of the center.

On an unrelated issue, Clements said the station still is seeking a part-time reporter in Haines. The position is advertised at 12 hours per week.
