As many of you know, Poppy Day was May 1. Poppy cans are placed around town, at local businesses, from May 1 until July 1. The poppies, which grew wild on the battlefields of Flanders, became a symbol of the sacrifice shown by the doughboys of World War I. Its blood-red bloom became a sign of hope and renewal for those who lived and walked away from war. For those who sacrificed their lives, the poppy became a memorial to their bravery.

American veterans brought home that image and planted it with the American Legion Auxiliary. Every year the poppy blooms for the benefit of those who served America. Poppy contributions are entirely devoted towards the rehabilitation and assistance for veterans and their families.

On April 22, the Auxiliary went to grades 2 through 5 to discuss the importance of the poppy, and offer the children the choice to participate in the poppy poster contest. There will be two classes: second and third grade, and fourth and fifth grade. Prizes will be awarded to the top three posters in each class. The Auxiliary will pick up the posters at school on May 4. Judging will be open to Legion and Auxiliary members, as well as veterans and active military. Judging will begin at 3 p.m. May 4 and continue through 7 p.m. May 5, upstairs at the American Legion Hall. Thank you for supporting veterans.
