The winning bid for roof maintenance and replacement at the Haines Senior Center came in nearly $25,000 under budget.

The Haines Borough Assembly on March 8 approved a resolution authorizing a contract for an amount not to exceed $64,375 to Stickler Construction for the project.

The borough received six other bids, ranging from $79,450 to $176,000.

Assembly member Scott Rossman was enthusiastic about awarding the contract to a local business. “We never invest in ourselves,” he said.

The scope of work includes demolition and reconstruction of the entrance roof marquee and concreted areas, and will install additional concrete for handicap parking. There’s a June 30 completion date.

Borough manager Mark Earnest said $89,000 had been budgeted for the work, with $39,000 from the capital improvement project fund and $50,000 from a legislative grant.

Borough clerk Julie Cozzi said the project may expand.

“The bid came in so much lower than what the estimate was,” Cozzi said. “The project was to do some maintenance on one part of the roof, and only replace one part, because we figured that’s all the money we had. (Borough facilities director Brad Maynard) believes now, with this low bid, that we could possibly negotiate a change order to have the whole roof replaced with the funds.”
