Members of the Haines Dolphins swim team still are collecting donations for their annual Swim-a-Thon fundraiser through Friday, March 18.

“After a preliminary fundraising tally, it’s looking like the team may reach its $17,500 fundraising goal,” said Sarah Posey, who coordinated Saturday’s two-hour Swim-a-Thon at the Haines pool.

Around 40 Dolphins combined to swim nearly 90 miles.

“Everyone met or exceeded their distance goals,” Posey said. “The maximum allowed is 200 lengths, and 13 Dolphins swam the full 200, some in as little as 90 minutes.”

She said Swim-a-Thon proceeds account for a third of the program’s annual budget. Last year’s Swim-a-Thon raised a record of more than $19,000.

“With an average of around $400 raised per swimmer, the Haines Dolphins have been in USA Swimming’s top 10 list of money earned per capita for three years running – top 10 among more than 600 teams nationwide,” Posey said. “We’d like to thank Haines and all the Dolphin athletes and their friends and families for helping the team achieve that incredible honor.”

The top three overall fundraisers were Jasper Posey, 12, $1,602; Skye Posey, 9, $1,563; and Kamakana Kanahele, 10, $1,375.

The Poseys trailed only Keegan Sundberg’s $1,765 total in 2008.
