The Haines High School cheerleaders placed second among 3A teams at the Region V high school basketball tournament Saturday in Juneau.

“This is my 13th year coaching, and we’ve gotten runner-up two years prior, so this is only the third time,” said coach Teri Bastable-Podsiki.

Petersburg’s cheerleaders were first in the tournament.

The Haines squad includes seniors Teslin Podsiki and Amanda Smalley, juniors Maggie Daly and Cassie Galasso, sophomore Margarette Jones and freshman Serena Badgley.

Their chant at Saturday’s performance informed the crowd “we came to win and put on a show” and warned that though “our numbers may be small,” they would still “school you.”

Smalley was named to the All-Conference team for both cheerleading and dance. She also earned academic recognition.

Haines won the overall sportsmanship award.

The Haines girls next week will head to the state basketball tournament in Anchorage, where they will compete against squads of a similar size.

They will host a $10 lasagna fundraiser 6 p.m. Saturday at the Haines School and will perform for the guests.
