This weekend’s snowmachine “Poker Ride” has been canceled.
“The weather conditions are just not conducive this year,” said Karen Hess of the Chilkat Snowburners. “If it snows, you just go right through the snow, and there’s no base; it’s just bare ground underneath.”
The 14th annual event had been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19, at River Adventures Dock.
“The lake is really bad,” Hess said. “The lake has had overflow, and it’s just bad conditions. It’s not really good for kids’ riding, which is what we normally get.”
She said snow this week could not salvage the ride, and there are no plans to reschedule it.
“Normally, you get snow and it packs hard and freezes, so even if you get snow on top of it, you’ll get a hard pack underneath and you’ve got snow for the snowmachine to run on,” Hess said. “Now, it’s been this light, fluffy stuff, and it blows it off and it freezes, and it’s nothing but hard ground underneath.”
