Once again, Haines Drama/Debate/Forensics volunteers swept the regional championships. Nearly 100 students from Haines, Wrangell, Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Mount Edgecumbe competed this past weekend and almost as many judges were recruited from the community to evaluate performances and offer insightful critiques.
Here are the final results from the annual DDF extravaganza: Alexandra Feit easily won top honors in the Judge Wrangler competition, amassing the highest body count in memory, Dan Henry crushed the field in Competition Results Accounting (of course, he was keeping score.) In Sustenance, Lisa Schwartz took gold and silver with Brenda Jones souping up the bronze by pinch-hitting for Schwartz with a ladle in the seventh inning (Schwartz returned in the eighth and closed out the game), and Mountain Market won honorable mention in Sustenance for the seventh consecutive year in the Stimulants With or Without Cream competition. Karen Meizner and Laurie Mastrella tied for first in Extemporaneous Leak-Plugging and Pretournament Logistics (the most stressful DDF event) and the Meizner/Bowmans won the Local Hostel award by a hilton, housing 10 male competitors for the entire weekend. Oy veh.
While not a volunteer, it should be duly noted Tiana Taylor took two firsts in professional categories, winning both the Tournament Overseer competition and the dangerous CUBRGFSG event (Cleaning Up Bear-Related Garbage From School Grounds).
Many thanks to all other local entries. Without you this tournament would have been a royal…let’s just say not as much fun – and good luck next year.
