Dozens of muddy paw prints, some streaked with blood, mark the wall of an enclosed porch of an Officers’ Row home where a brown bear early Saturday tore away the bottom of a door to reach a 20-pound bag of dog treats.

Homeowner Suzanne Vuillet-Smith said her family may be out as much as $2,000 in repairs, including a new door. The home is also a bed-and-breakfast.

“We’ll have to send it into insurance and see what they say. We feel so bad because we didn’t want to be part of the problem. It was always our neighbors,” said Vuillet-Smith.

The break-in was one of several reports of damage attributed to bear activity during the weekend. They included destruction of a fruit tree on Small Tracts Road and damage to a fabric boat shed behind Fort Seward.

Vuillet-Smith said she discovered the damage on leaving the house about 5 a.m. “At first I thought it was hit by a car. The door was in pieces. There were parts of our house in FAA Road and the wall had been smashed in.”

A weed-eater, a rake and other garden tools were also strewn around, as were recyclables stored on the porch. The bag of dog treats, left leaning against the same wall the bear started tearing apart, was gone. Two chest freezers, full of food, were left undisturbed. “Thank God it didn’t get into those,” Vuillet-Smith said.

The bruin had apparently started by tearing a piece of siding off the building before targeting the door, which was bolted shut. It tore off most of the bottom half of the door, leaving a twisted-up doorknob dangling. “That must have been some angry bear.”

The blood made her think the bear may have been the same one shot on Small Tracts Road last week, Vuillet-Smith said, but others have suggested the bear may have injured itself tearing out house planking, she said.

Interestingly, the incident didn’t wake guests sleeping in a room at the front of the house.

Vuillet-Smith slept in a room adjoining the porch the following night, with a rifle nearby, but the bear didn’t return. “(Police sergeant) Jason Joel said I could shoot it if it came back.”

Bears have been through the property before, including one that climbed into her family’s fishing boat, but she said this is the first time there’s been damage. A neighbor said he saw two bears in the area at about 2 a.m. Saturday.
