The Haines Borough will be asked to approve the school board’s recent decision to spend nearly $280,000 for a roof over the paved playground there.
The 60-by-90 foot roof would provide some shelter for students at recess during inclement weather and also could be used for gym class, special events and fire drills, school board members have said. The roof would be funded with money remaining from the school construction project.
school board member Sarah Swinton recently said such shelters are common at Southeast schools and that local weather warrants the expense.
Borough manager Mark Earnest characterized said matter as procedural. “We’re trying to do it right and make sure everybody’s on the same page with the school board’s direction. It’s a significant investment and something the borough’s going to be responsible for.”
