Haines Friends of Recycling hauled about six tons of scrap metal during last weekend’s two-day collection event.
“It went very well. People brought dead washers and dryers, bedsprings, dead engines, a lot of siding, random pipes and rusty barrels. You name it, they brought it,” said group board member Frank Holmes.
The junk metal went by van this week to a Seattle recycler. The group will break even on the collection,” Holmes said.
“Scrap metal we look at as a resource. The materials are there as a resource. When you recycle them, you don’t have to mine them, especially aluminum, copper and steel. They’re talking about opening new mines all the time.”
The group will hold its third annual electronics waste collection event 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday June 25-26 at HFR headquarters on Small Tracts Road. For 40 cents per pound, the group will accept computers, printers, TVs, microwaves, stereos and radios.
No large washers or dryers or kitchen-type appliances will be accepted. Electronics contain heavy metals that are hazardous.
