The Lutak Dock
It seems that everyone running for assembly is in support of refurbishing the Lutak Dock. But why? This is the new white elephant, the new sacred cow. But we don’t need the dock, really. The roll-on barge facility can bring our goods and take our products out. Outside of timber and mining we don’t really have any […]
Candidates diverge on local economy, role of government at debate
The four Haines Borough Assembly candidates agreed on several broad points at a Sept. 16 debate: Haines needs a more diverse year-round economy; Haines needs infrastructure improvements; Haines needs federal funds. But the candidates—Richard Clement, Tyler Huling, Brenda Josephson and Debra Schnabel—differed on key issues including taxes, the borough’s role in solid waste management and whether Haines […]
Could Haines become a Tai Chi hub?
Following a master’s visit last week, Haines now has four certified Tai Chi instructors – a robust number for an Alaskan town, according to local practitioners. “I would love to…perhaps make this a Tai Chi hub,” said Cherri Price, one of the new instructors. Price, 63, has been studying the Chinese martial art, which blends balance, […]

Late Chilkoot River sockeye run causes surprise, nostalgia
Fishermen in Lutak Inlet saw a bumper run of sockeye salmon in the last two weeks of August as more than 24,000 fish passed the weir between Aug. 22 and Aug. 31—a trend that reminds old timers of the run’s historic strength. “We definitely were not expecting this,” said Nicole Zeiser, biologist for the Haines area Alaska […]
Duly Noted
Parker Schnabel isn’t the only Haines miner mucking about on prime time television. Creighton Lapp, a 1996 Haines High School graduate, has been featured on “Goldfathers,” a National Geographic Channel reality show about real-life gold miners in Fairbanks. Aunt Kathi Lapp of Haines said Creighton started mining years ago with dad Clayton Lapp and granddad Ed Lapp and has run his own operation […]
Bald Eagle Foundation cancels fall festival
The American Bald Eagle Foundation announced Tuesday that it is canceling its November festival due to COVID-19 concerns and a limited budget. “We’ve had an incredibly difficult couple of years,” said ABEF raptor program manager Sidney Campbell. “We’re stretched really thin as far as resources go because we’ve had such poor tourism. We could try to host […]

Chum returns are off to a good start, but sockeye below average
Three weeks into the Upper Lynn Canal commercial gillnetting season, fisheries managers say it’s off to a good start. “It’s actually pretty good. It picked up quite a bit this week,” said Alaska Department of Fish and Game area management biologist Nicole Zeiser, referring to the week ending July 9. “The chum salmon harvest almost doubled from […]
