Candidates for Haines’ seat in the state House of Representatives and at least one candidate for state Senate have said they’ll attend a debate 7 p.m. Monday at the Haines School, organizer Royal Henderson said this week. State Rep. Bill Thomas, R-Haines, challenger Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins of Sitka and state Sen. Albert Kookesh, D-Angoon, have confirmed they’ll […]

Scout camp dedication on Oct. 13
A dedication of the new Boy Scout camp at Mount Riley is set for noon Saturday, Oct. 13. Organizer Sean Gaffney said the event will include a hot dog cookout, horseshoes and other games. Great Alaska Council Executive Director Clifford Crissmore of Anchorage will attend. The dedication marks the completion of the property’s shower and […]
Thomas has seniority and clout
We offer this letter of support for state Rep. Bill Thomas, our effective state representative. Bill has served the communities he represents very well and equitably. He has the seniority and clout that comes with the experience of getting things done. His many years fishing give him an understanding of fisheries issues. As chairman of the […]
We’re lucky to have Thomas in legislature
Bill Thomas is an extraordinary person who has worked hard to achieve his prominent position in the legislature. He has been a strong voice for rural interests. He is a fisherman; a veteran; a champion for children and seniors; a Tlingit from the Chilkat Valley with a deep love for and commitment to the people he represents. More than that, he has common […]
Thomas needs to reject $2 billion for oil
To get my vote in this next election I’d have to hear from state Rep. Bill Thomas that he would reject Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell’s plan to give benefits to the oil industry that by some estimates would amount to a loss of state revenue of $2 billion a year. For the sake of debate, assume that […]
Can’t put 23-year-old in state House
All the promises and letters can not convince me to vote for a 23-year-old. I compare putting Kreiss-Tomkins in the state House to asking my nine-year-old grandchild to drive me in an 18-wheeler to Anchorage: A dangerous choice. Bill Thomas has proved he works for Alaskans, he has life experiences that Kreiss-Tomkins won’t have for another 40 years and maybe never. Knowing him […]
Thomas voted for to rebate oil companies
There’s no doubt that Bill Thomas has brought home the bacon for Haines, and we all appreciate it. The question is whether there will be bacon to bring home in the years to come. Thomas endangered the fiscal stability of both our community and the entire state when he voted in favor of Gov. Sean Parnell’s proposal […]
Commemorative dinner set for Sept. 11
In their first combined effort, the American Legion, Emblem Club and American Legion Auxiliary are sponsoring a community potluck dinner in remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Set for 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the American Legion hall, the evening will include local speakers and an opportunity for individuals to gather. State […]
Voters reject coastal management initiative
Voters in the Chilkat Valley aligned with ones statewide Tuesday, rejecting a ballot proposition that would have restored Alaska’s coastal management program, but by a smaller margin. In Haines and Haines Highway districts, voters rejected coastal management by identical, 51 percent margins. In Klukwan, 17 of 25 voters, or 68 percent, voted in opposition. Statewide, 62 […]
Contributions reflect support for Kreiss-Tomkins
I’ve known Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins for nearly a dozen years and couldn’t have been more excited when he filed to represent Haines — and Sitka, and all of rural Southeast Alaska — in the Alaska Legislature. I’ve followed the campaign closely, and was excited when Jonathan and Bill Thomas, Jonathan’s opponent, filed their fundraising reports. I crunched […]
