Landline telephone service provided by GCI Communications Corp. is experiencing statewide disruptions this weekend throughout Alaska, according to the company.
“We are currently aware of a statewide issue impacting telephone landline customers who may experience no dial tone, busy signals, or difficulty completing calls,” a recording at the company’s customer service phone number states. “Our technical teams are actively investigating, so if you’re calling in regards to one of these issues, please be aware that we’re working to restore service as quickly as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”
An online customer service representative stated in a text message that “expected resolution is between 11:30am – 12pm” on Sunday, but “this may be extended.”
The cause of the outage is not stated by the company.
The outage as of mid-Sunday morning is not mentioned at GCI’s website (including its service outage page) and social media pages.
There are about 110,000 adults with landline service with all telecom companies in Alaska, representing about 19.2% of customers with phone service, according to the website NumberBarn, citing U.S. Census Bureau statistics. GCI reported it has about 199,000 wireless customers as of the end of 2025, but the number of landline customers is not provided.
