Two tribal council members were reelected and one new member was seated in the Chilkoot Indian Association’s elections this month, with four candidates running for three open seats.

New tribal council member Aubrey Katzeek was the top vote-getter with 63 votes. Incumbent council members Gwen Sauser and Georgiana Hotch won reelection with 61 and 52 votes, respectively.

The fourth-place candidate was incumbent council president James Hart, who missed out on a seat by the smallest possible margin, finishing just one vote behind Hotch.

Hotch, a longtime council member, said Tuesday she was excited to see younger members like Katzeek elected.

“It’s wonderful to see younger members getting interested like (Katzeek). It’s exciting,” she said.

The elections also saw Jessie Grant elected the Chilkoot Indian Association’s Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) representative. Grant received 33 votes. The two other candidates, Jan Hill and James Hart, received 26 and 25 votes, respectively.
