Don’t be mislead by language on an ore-ship ban at the Lutak Dock.
The Sept. 25 Chilkat Valley News states that Gabe Thomas intends to introduce a motion to adopt an ordinance that would ban ore ships at the Lutak Dock.
In 2024 he proposed the same idea which received little traction from the assembly.
Because an ordinance can be overturned by an assembly vote, this provides no guarantees.
On the other hand, a charter amendment that banned ore shipments or storage facilities would need to be voted on by the community.
Assemblyman Gabe Thomas has had six years to propose and support a charter amendment to ban ore ships, storage or intermediate holding of ore at the Lutak Dock. Now, two weeks before the election, he has stated he will introduce a motion to ban ore ships from the Lutak Dock, a gesture that can easily be overturned by any assembly, at any time.
Don’t believe that an ordinance banning ore-related activities at Lutak Dock will stick.
