This April, assembly candidate Eben Sargent posted a Facebook comment about seniors serving in local government, writing: “Kind of like former government doctors and former state geologists coming here, living off their taxpayer-funded retirement checks in Haines and using their free time to participate in government to reduce their local tax bill.”
I was troubled to see such a dismissive view of seniors in our community. My husband and I have called Haines home since 2004, and we are grateful to have found such a remarkable place to retire. We are not alone — recent census data shows the 65-plus age group is the fastest-growing demographic in Haines.
Seniors are a tremendous asset. They bring not only their retirement income but also a wealth of experience, civic spirit and energy that enriches our town. Many are resourceful, engaged, and deeply committed to making Haines better for everyone.
I endorse Richard Clement and Gabe Thomas for re-election to the assembly. They have consistently shown their commitment to representing residents of all ages. Their inclusive, fiscally responsible approach and dedication to our community deserve our continued support.
On Oct. 7, please join me in voting to re-elect Richard Clement and Gabe Thomas — leaders who value and represent all of us.
