The Haines Borough Public Library has wrapped up the summer reading program for the season. Holly Davis says that over 100 kids received certificates of completion and prizes, including coupons for Rusty Compass, donated by Lee Robinson. For every 10 books that a child read, they received one to keep. The readers enjoyed hotdogs, cookies, and lemonade. Davis says that she put the older kids to work with the set up as well using line-waiting technology this year. The ‘line waiting technology’ was actually the older kids teaching juggling, hula hoop technique and guitar to everyone in line. Davis’s method of crowd control was a success, and the summer reading program wrapped up another successful year.
Taylor Cowen and Margarette Jones got hitched on Aug. 9, the same weekend as four other couples in Haines. The Cowens followed the celebration up with a legendary two-day honeymoon yard sale featuring vintage goods, baskets and sporting equipment as well as items from the wedding reception – treasures that seemed to replenish hourly. The yard-sale funds are for a planned honeymoon to Cabo and a road trip to Costa Rica. The newlyweds say that Cabo was not their initial destination, but one of Cowen’s groomsmen is getting married in Cabo, so the opportunity to visit was not to be passed up. The yard sale was held at the reception location, with the. structure repurposed. It’ll be reused again when the couple builds their home on the same spot on Chestnut Drive.
The Haines ferry dock was the sight of an impressive dance party good-bye for Klover Cinocco. Her friends and family celebrated her departure at the dock with music, dancing and plenty of hugs.
The 22nd annual Goddess Party was at Taste of Deishú on Saturday. Knikki Cinocco says the donations from the Goddess Party go to Becky’s Place, and donations will still be accepted at Taste of Deishú through the end of the week. She says that goddesses from ages 11 to 77 attended the event, dancing on the deck late into the night. Some of the notable appetizers were a gooseberry pie made by Annette Hart and a super salad with pickled beets from Sierra Jimenez. Hart dressed for the party as the goddess of the silver edge. Courtney Culbeck was the goddess of reconstruction. Knikki and Brooke Cinocco led a circle honoring the females who came before and the goddesses within. Brittney Dunbar, Stojanka Lynch, and Vija Pelekis were also key players in making the annual celebration a success.
