Haines Borough tourism director Tanya Carlson said the Haines Century Ride, a three-distance bike race held Aug. 17, was a success. The ride drew 19 participants.
“I was happy with it. A few kinks need to be worked out. We’re planning to do it again next year the same weekend,” Carlson said.
Carlson said that, ideally, she’d like to grow the event, tapping into riders in Whitehorse, Y.T. and Juneau. She said she would likely keep the same date of the event, as early August conflicts with Juneau’s Aukeman Triathlon and she’d like to hold it before the start of the school year.
Carlson said she’d rather not try to link the event with summer bike races in Juneau and Whitehorse. “Those are a lot more competitive than what we’re looking at.”
Expanding the event would require more than the handful of volunteers she had for the event, she said.
Geoff Harries of Whitehorse won the 100-mile event in 5:42:00. Local finishers included Sean Asquith, 6:00:00; Chip and Heather Lende, 6:02:00, and Dan Humphrey, 6:03:00. Gina St. Clair of Haines won the 80-mile event in 4:49:00.
Vince Hansen of Haines won the 20-mile race in 1:24:00.
