The Haines Borough has placed new picnic tables, benches and bear-proof garbage cans around town in recent weeks.

Borough facilities director Brad Maynard said the borough’s public works department built 10 picnic tables this winter, and a few have been placed on the beach between Lookout Park and the Port Chilkoot Dock. The borough also purchased 10 benches and 10 bear-proof garbage cans.

“I just figured it was time to start putting some new stuff around town,” Maynard said.

He said some of the items have been placed in the last few weeks, and the others would be added later near the Port Chilkoot Dock. Maynard said money for the upgrades came from the public works budget and cruise ship taxes.
