The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a search Tuesday afternoon for a 40-year-old woman who fell overboard from a large cruise ship into Lynn Canal early the same morning.
The captain of the large ship Celebrity Solstice alerted the Coast Guard at 3 a.m. Tuesday of the emergency. The incident was reported when the ship was near Eldred Rock.
Coast Guard rescue crews including a helicopter and two boats searched for more than nine hours, covering an area of 68 square nautical miles.
“Despite our best efforts to locate the individual, it is with heavy hearts that we make the decision to suspend the search,” said Coast Guard Lt.j.g. Trevor Layman, a Sector Juneau Command Center duty officer. “The decision to suspend active searching is based on a number of factors including weather, sea state, water temperature and other variables.”
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
The 2,852 passenger Celebrity Solstice is operated by Celebrity Cruises.
