The Haines Borough School Board is looking for a new member after the sudden resignation of Mark Jamison last month.

Jamison is facing misdemeanor charges that he violated protective orders filed by members of his immediate family, including twice on school grounds.

School board members voted unanimously to accept his resignation without comment, though superintendent Lilly Boron wrote in her report to the board that she wanted to extend her appreciation to him for his dedicated service and contributions as a board member.

To fill the vacant seat, the board is asking people to send letters of interest to the district office by Friday, Nov. 21.  The board will then announce the names of the candidates and interview them in public, followed by an executive session to nominate someone to fill out the remainder of Jamison’s term, which is about a year.

“We’ve had several people already express interest,” Boron said.

The board also swore in its two newly re-elected board members, Shelly Sloper and Keely Baumgartner. Then the group voted to organize, electing Sloper as president, Michael Wald as vice president and Baumgartner as treasurer.

Jamison is facing both civil and criminal court cases, including hearings on protective orders that were in effect until Nov. 12 and a second representation hearing on Nov. 19 for the criminal charges. He told the Haines court he could not afford a lawyer to fight both cases and requested a court-appointed attorney on the criminal charges.
