The Chilkoot Indian Association is accepting food donations for Western Alaska residents displaced by the remnants of Typhoon Halong.
The drive is specifically focused on locally harvested or preserved foods, to provide for evacuees who have been “cut off from their traditional foodways,” said Chilkoot Indian Association’s Liam Cassidy.
While the drive will also accept donations of shelf-stable supermarket goods, it would be more efficient to donate money for those types of foods to be purchased directly in Anchorage, without the cost of shipping the food from Haines, Cassidy said.
Food can be dropped off at the Chilkoot Indian Association office on Third Avenue between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Chilkoot Indian Association, along with the Haines Ministerial Association, is directing residents who wish to donate money to relief efforts to the Alaska Community Foundation.
