Six borough government seats will be contested in October’s election. The borough assembly, planning commission, and school boards have two open seats each.
Individuals hoping to run had 20 days to file their candidacy, before a 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday.
For 19 of those days, the filing period was quiet. Borough clerk Mike Denker said as of Tuesday night, only three candidates total had filed to run. But in the span of just a few hours on Wednesday, that number tripled.
As of press time at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Denker said nine candidates had filed, including all six incumbents. After the deadline the borough announced the following candidates Thursday:
Running for assembly are incumbents Gabe Thomas and Richard Clement and newcomers Eben Sargent, Harriet Brouillette, and John Norton. Brouillette later withdrew her candidacy.
Running for planning commission are incumbents Dan Schultz and Rachel Saitzyk and newcomers Nathanael Reams, Joe Parnell, and Kimberly Rosado.
For the school board, only the two incumbents, Keely Baumgartner and Michelle Sloper, filed to run.
Additionally, a ballot proposition asks voters if the borough should implement a seasonal sales tax rate of 7% from April – September and reduce the sales tax to 4.5 % from October – March, while also exempting groceries during that time period.
The additional revenue would go toward the school, and other general municipal purposes.
Election day this year is Tuesday, Oct. 7 and polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Voters in the Haines #1 district can vote at the ANB/ANS Hall at the corner of First Avenue and Willard Street. Voters in the Haines #2 district can vote at the Klehini Valley Fire Department building on Mosquito Lake Road.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that Harriet Brouillette withdrew from the assembly race on Friday, August 22.
