The Army took them all over the country, living in Washington, Montana, California, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Illinois. After retirement, they lived in Wauna, Wash., Lawton, Okla., Murray, Ky., and finally settled in Pinehurst in 2015.

Justine and Gary have four children. Mitchael Ostlund, who passed away in 2013, Lisa Waldbauer (Jim), Kristina Foust (Charlie), and Gerald Ostlund (Stacey). They have seven grandchildren. Ryan Waldbauer (Stephanie), Erik Waldbauer (Kelsey), Karen Neuman (Patrick), Heidi Hedstrom, who passed away in 2015, Sarah Peay (Ross), Hannah Ostlund, and Abigail Ostlund, and two great-granddaughters, Lelah and Laurel Neuman.

Justine was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Emma Smith, her sister, Mary Lou Sullivan, her brother, Ray Smith Jr., her son, Mitchael Ostlund, and granddaughter Heidi Hedstrom.

She was a faithful lifelong Presbyterian, and served as the Presbyterian women moderator in Olympia, Wash., in the early 1990s.

Her greatest gifts and talents were gardening and cooking. She spent hours a day tending to the yard and making wonderful meals for her family. She was an avid reader and loved nothing more than a good mystery novel.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Oct. 15, 2025, at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your local food bank.
