A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter picked up two people in good condition Monday after their small plane hit a log while landing in Chilkoot Inlet near Haines, the Coast Guard said today.

No serious injuries were reported, but the two on the plane were flown to Juneau where they were met by EMS crews.

The Coast Guard received the call for assistance around 4 p.m. from the FAA in Anchorage, which had gotten a report of a small plane accident with the two aboard needing help. Not knowing the exact location of the accident, the Coast Guard issued an urgent marine broadcast to vessels in the area, launched a helicopter from Sitka, and sent a response vessel from Station Juneau.

“Shortly after, we got an updated report from the people aboard the aircraft that they were actually on land,” Chief Petty Officer Travis Magee said. “They were in a grassy area, no reported injuries. They also reported that they were attempting to land their aircraft and struck a log.”

The aircraft apparently was unable to take off again, so the pilot and passenger requested help.

“The Coast Guard had already launched their helicopter, which arrived at 6 p.m.,” Magee said. “They recovered the two people and transported them to Juneau and awaiting EMS.”

There was no information available about the pilot and passenger, the type of plane, or where the plane was flying from.
