Takshanuk Watershed Council is a community-minded nonprofit that provides free-of-charge opportunities to the community. Our education department works tirelessly to ensure the youth in Haines and Klukwan have a variety of opportunities to explore the Chilkat Watershed.

Our educational garden, Marvin’s Garden, is 100% grant funded. We provide gardening and composting education and offer free summer programming like Kudziteeyí Tl’átk, Stream Team, and hiking opportunities. This fills a childcare need in our community by providing a safe space for students to learn and grow.

SnowSchool provides classroom lessons in snow science and winter ecology with a field component in snowshoeing or skiing. We have received grant awards to make this program free to the schools, while also paying for Haines Avalanche Center to provide winter safety lessons to students. Through our efforts we have helped the schools get snowshoes at a discounted price and have awarded the schools grant funds to support outdoor learning.

That’s not all! We provide bear safety education, sponsor a local foods challenge, offer free afterschool programs, host Watershed Weekly on KHNS, and coordinate the marine debris cleanup removing over 10,000 pounds of trash from local beaches.  We host potlucks and community events on our property at Jones Point and bring people together to celebrate the Chilkat Watershed.

We appreciate the community support, and look forward to continuing to serve every citizen in the Upper Lynn Canal. Sincerely,

Tracy Wirak-Cassidy, Education Coordinator, Takshanuk Watershed Council
