Luke Davis ran into a hiccup getting back in time for his spring semester at Eastern Oregon University when the Hubbard ferry was stranded in Haines on Jan. 3. Davis, 19, and his mother Holly Davis were supposed to leave town on the evening ferry but instead waited for several hours while the crew worked to repair an electrical issue. Coast Guard spokesperson Sam Dapcevich said the ship’s emergency switchboard was not getting power and the Coast Guard issued a no-sail order meaning the ship could not leave Haines until the issue was repaired. Ultimately the ferry was able to leave on Jan. 5 after the crew got remote assistance from a technician and the Coast Guard gave approval to sail back to Juneau.
Tulsi Zahnow joined 87 other students who graduated from Linfield University’s Portland Campus this fall with a Nursing degree. Zahnow is Haines’ 2018 Salutatorian.
