After a series of interviews and community meetings with finalists, the Haines Board of Education has announced that Lilly Boron has accepted an offer to be the school district’s next superintendent.
Boron was picked after a search process that yielded nine applications for the board; they selected two finalists and brought them into town for a community meeting on Monday and a formal interview with board members on Tuesday.
Boron’s main competition was Yupiit School District director of special programs Kary Del Signore who was also a finalist for the Chatham School District’s superintendent position in 2022.

Boron has been with the school district since 1999, and taught for 21 years before becoming principal in 2020. She applied for the position after current superintendent Roy Getchell announced in early October that he’d be leaving his post at the end of the year.
Getchell wrote a letter of recommendation for Boron in which he called her an “exceptional” leader who is well qualified to manage both the immediate crises and long term needs of the community.
Board president Michelle Sloper said the board and Boron are currently negotiating a contract and have not yet landed on a salary. The range included in the job description was $135,000 to $150,000. Getchel was offered $115,000 in his first year which was the highest of any previous Haines superintendent at the time.
