Betty Ewing Dewitt, 89, died on Oct. 20. Dewitt, her husband and three children moved to Haines in 1962. A full obituary will be included in a future edition of the Chilkat Valley News. 

Gov. Mike Dunleavy is set to issue an executive proclamation declaring Veterans Small Business Week. Visiting Haines Rep. Andi Story shared the details of the proclamation, which include that it will be held Nov. 11-15, 2024. The idea is to recognize veteran entrepreneurs and encourage Alaskans to support them by buying goods and services from their businesses. 

Borough mayor Tom Morphet will be out of town from Oct. 28 through Nov. 17 handling family affairs in Pennsylvania. Deputy mayor Cheryl Stickler will chair the Nov. 12 assembly meeting. 

At the 50th anniversary of the Southeast Alaska Honor Music Festival, Maddox Rogers was first chair in tuba and Willa Stuart was first chair in trombone. Teacher Matt Davis said the two did a good job and had a great time performing in Petersburg.

The Haines Volunteer Fire Department has two voucher programs running that volunteer Lyle Huff is looking to raise awareness about. So far this year, thirteen people have picked up a voucher for $30 off a set of ice grippers from one of five local retailers, while 10 have picked up vouchers for $25 off carbon monoxide or smoke detectors from Haines Home Building supply or Lutak Lumber. Vouchers can be picked up from the police department dispatch center.
