Former KHNS reporter and Haines resident Claire Stremple will be taking over as managing editor of KTOO Public Media’s newsroom in Juneau on Nov. 4. Stremple, who lived in Haines from 2018 to 2021, has family in the community – her cousin Deborah Vogt is a longtime Haines resident.
The Chilkat Valley’s absentee in-person and early voting locations opened on Oct. 21. The Haines borough clerk’s office is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voters can also go to the Chilkat Indian Village office from Monday – Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alaskans can rank eight pairs of nominees for U.S. President and Vice President, and four U.S. House Representatives. Haines-area residents can also vote for Sen. Jesse Kiehl on Senate District B and Andi Story in House District 3 or choose a write-in candidate.
Two ballot measures are also on the table, including ballot measure No. 1, which would increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2027 and provide that workers get paid for up to a week of sick leave. Ballot measure No. 2 would asks voters whether they would like to repeal or keep the state’s open primary and top-four ranked choice voting system. Finally, voters will be asked whether to retain two supreme court justices, two court of appeals judges and one district court judge.
