Jennifer Stimson of Fort Collins, Colorado is visiting her daughter Janine Allen in Haines for the week. Allen said the trip was somewhat impromptu but the two have been enjoying the time together and the dozens of swans currently hanging around Mosquito Lake. 

Students at both the Haines and Klukwan schools got the chance to process moose this week after two sublegal moose were killed by hunters and brought to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office in Haines. 

Mike Howard, also known as “Santa Mike,” has died. Friends and family have shared messages marking his passage on social media and are currently fundraising to bring him back to Haines for burial. 

This year’s Permanent Fund dividend amount includes a one-time energy rebate for a combined $1,702. The payments are expected in Alaskans’ bank accounts starting Oct. 3. 

Longtime Chilkat Valley resident Ron Martin died in a boating accident on the Chilkat River. Many of his family members are in town and plan a service on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at the high school gym. Son Daniel Martin said the family is planning a potluck following the service at the American Legion. A full obituary will follow.  
Gary Jacobson celebrated his birthday on Tuesday. He started the day taking pictures of bears along the Chilkoot River. He saw Lulu and 902 and her two cubs. Later at the Fogcutter, sharing drinks with friends, Jacobson – who has been a Chilkat Valley resident for more than three decades – said he’s not quite sure how old he is because he quit counting.
