Haley Boron, daughter of Lilly and Matt Boron, recently learned what her job assignment would be in the Air Force when she is commissioned as an officer after graduation this spring. Boron, who is the Vice Commander of the Drum & Bugle Corps, was en route to Texas to play at a football game with the band when she found out she got a pilot slot on the C-17 Globemaster. Lilly Boron said after graduation, Haley will go on to multiple levels of pilot training for the job. 

Robert Plucker (Bob) died in hospice care in the company of his daughters Virginia Zanger and Dorothy Heiret on Sept. 16 in Bothell, Washington. Plucker and his wife Margaret retired in Haines 28 years ago. His daughter Holly Davis, her husband Matt, and their four children also live in Haines. His son John Plucker graduated from Haines High School, though he and his family live in Norway now. 

A piece by Haines artist James Hart is being featured in the Washington State History Museum through September. Hart submitted his acrylic on deer hide formline piece “Transformation” to the museum for this year’s IN THE SPIRIT exhibition. “Transformation is a piece that was created to push myself as an artist,” wrote Hart, according to a museum social media post. “My clan crest is a frog and I tend to lean that way when creating because it brings a timestamp to who I am and where my growth has been in my artist career.” 

Spencer Baumgartner, 13, recently picked up a sponsorship through pickleball gear giant Selkirk. His dad Jordan Baumgartner said the family homeschooled last year and traveled the country. They ended up on the pickleball circuit and Spencer placed nationally a few times.  It was enough to land him on Selkirk’s radar and now he gets a free paddle and other free gear. He also represents the company when he goes to tournaments. Spencer and brother Parker Baumgartner are traveling to Kingwood in Houston for a tournament soon. 

Genevieve Bell recently ran a 25k in Juneau to celebrate her mid-August birthday. The course took her along Basin Road, Perseverance Trail, Red Mill Trail, the Glory Hole overlook, Granite Creek Trail and then a steep run up the Mt. Roberts Trail at the end. Bell was joined by her daughter Camelia, as well as some other mom and daughter pairs.  She said the group enjoyed yoga together afterward. 

Former music teacher and Haines High School principal Gary Matthews died at 80-years-old on Sept. 7. A full obituary will be published in the next edition of the Chilkat Valley News.
