Haines Avalanche Center is excited to announce that on Aug. 10 we installed the tower for a new weather station in the mountains above Lutak Inlet. The Lutak weather station will serve landslide and avalanche interests by monitoring temperature, precipitation, snowpack, soil, and groundwater. It will include a webcam and other sensors that will be installed in the following weeks. This project is moving forward because of the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation’s funding. Other partners in this multi-year project include Sitka Sound Science Center and the University of Oregon (part of the NSF-funded Kutí project), the State of Alaska Department of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), USDA SNOTEL, our local community partners, members and staff. Thanks to Temsco helicopters for transporting materials, Constantine Mining for the tower, tools from Joey Jacobson, Kevin Forster, and Graham Kraft, and volunteers in the field Chorus Bishop, Henry Leasia, and Bramm Scholz.
