Kat and Ted Cheney welcomed a fifth member of their family, baby boy Taylor, on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Juneau’s Bartlett Regional Hospital. Taylor was born at 4:22 p.m. He weighed six pounds, six ounces and measured 19 inches. Call Lexie DeWitt to get on a schedule for meal deliveries.

Felix Anser Sylvan Benassi was born to Cassie Miller and Josh Benassi on 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at Juneau’s Bartlett Regional Hospital. Felix weighed eight pounds, 10 ounces, and measured 21 inches. Older brother Corvus and Cassie’s sister Brittany Miller were on hand for Felix’s arrival.

Alec Jurgeleit is in Haines visiting family members and for a joint birthday celebration with his sister Elizabeth Jurgeleit.

Haines Student Council members have returned from the Alaska Association of Student Governments 2016 Fall Conference, which was held in Wasilla last weekend. A Fall Market Festival will be held Sunday, Oct. 23 from 1-3 p.m. at Mosquito Lake School Community Center. This pre-Halloween celebration will feature pumpkin carving, face-painting and coloring. The 105th Alaska Native Brotherhood/Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp was held in Juneau on Oct. 4-8. Sonny WilliamsTed Hart and Tim Ackerman were ANB Camp 5 delegates, and Carol LawrenceLeanne Converse and Jackie Mazeikas were ANS Camp 5 delegates. Carol Duis of Haines was elected as ANS Grand Secretary.

Klukwan students last week participated in “OneVote2016” the largest mock presidential election in the country. Seventy-eight percent of students voted for Hillary Clinton, with 9 percent going to Donald Trump. An additional 9 percent of votes went to write-in candidate Raven Cora Hotch, a Klukwan fifth grader. The remaining 4 percent of votes went to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. In the past five presidential elections, the results of the mock election have accurately reflected the outcome of the national election. An exit poll determined “broken government” was the election’s top issue.

Former resident Nadine Price’s Anchorage School District PE class, “Agut 907,” was awarded an Innovation in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) grant from the NoVo Foundation. Her class helps students develop social-emotional skills through Native art and subsistence practices.

The Light the Night, Remembrance Luminary Walk put on by Hospice of Haines, was held Friday. Participants in the sixth annual event lit candles in honor of loved ones who have died, and shared memories and hot beverages over a fire at Lookout Park.
