Tom True, 67, died in Sitka on Tuesday of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). True worked 30 years as an immigration inspector and customs agent at the U.S. border station. A full obituary will appear in next week’s CVN.
Lucille Irene Rose Lloyd was born to Joshua and Krystal Lloyd at 7:16 a.m. on March 16 at Juneau’s Bartlett Memorial Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs., 7 ozs., and measured 22 inches. She joins brother Wade, 8, and sisters Allie, 7, Chloe, 6 and Christina, 5. Grandmother Earleen Lloyd and great-grandmother Floy Manning have been helping with the older children. Grandmother Becky Hinkle was in Juneau with Krystal while grandpa Gary Hinkle stayed home and waited to meet his newest granddaughter.

Sampson Nickerson and Kecia Weatherwax came from Klawock to be married in Klukwan on March 17 in front of Eagle and Raven clan members. Joe Hotch officiated the event held at the Klukwan ANS Hall. Many friends and family shared in the celebration, including Sampson’s mother Maimie Nickerson and uncle Leonard Willard, Mary Jane Valentine, Josephine Johnson and Georgiana Hotch.
The Haines Sheldon Museum will bring journeyman archivist Jessie Hopper from Atlanta for six weeks this summer to complete processing of the Alaska Indian Arts collection and the Eric von Stauffenberg collection. The journeyman archivist will organize, box, and prepare descriptive indexes of the collections. Helen Alten is seeking housing for Jessie. Contact the museum if you can help.
The Alaska State Council is seeking submissions for Alaska’s “Artistic License” license plate. It’s a juried competition that will occur every four years, thanks to the efforts of state Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and former state Sen. Bill Stoltze. The selected artist will receive an honorarium of $1,000 and up to 10 other artists will receive $250 for their submissions. Sue Libenson, senior Arctic program officer for Pacific Environment, was recently recognized in Juneau by rear admiral Michael McAllister, who oversees the Coast Guard in Alaska, and Secretary General Kitak Lim of the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations agency which sets international shipping laws. Sue received a commemorative patch and a Challenge Coin for exemplary service. Challenge Coins are given as a recognition of special achievement. Libenson holds consultative status at the IMO.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has announced that the Haines Borough Public Library is among 30 finalists for the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service. Finalists are chosen for significant or exceptional contributions to their communities. The public is encouraged to share stories of the library’s excellence on the IMLS Facebook page during March and April. Winners will be announced later in the spring.
Glen and Alison Jacobson made a quick trip to Reno, Nev., to see daughter Anna Jacobson in South Lake Tahoe. Anna is working for Kirkwood and Heavenly ski resorts but was able to take a few days to downhill, Nordic and skate ski with the family. They enjoyed a huge snowpack and temperatures into the 60s, as well as incredible views of the lake. Allison’s brother Ketch tagged along and also skied at North Star resort with some friends. Anna will be here for a visit in June.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosted a lasagna dinner celebrating the Legion’s 98th birthday Saturday. Mery Blylie and Jackie Martin cooked. Other helpers included Andrea Ferrin, Kayliegh Fisher, Julie Ferrin and Doris Bell, and from the Sons of American Legion, Nick Kokotovich and Dean Risley. A dessert auction benefited the auxiliary’s scholarship fund. It’s an annual event.
