Nicole Stickler and David Lorentz were married Saturday afternoon, May 27, at the Letnikof beach pavilion. Jim Szymanski served as minister. The couple wrote their own vows. Bridesmaids included Teslin Podsiki, Alisha Young, Shelly Turner, Amanda Shepard of California and Daisy James of Hawaii. Will Hickman was groomsman. Ryan Sirota of New York served as flower man and James Stickler was ring bearer. Several guests came from out of town. David’s parents are Ike and Faith Lorentz. Parents of the bride include Jim and Cheryl Stickler, Brandie Stickler and Don Axelson. Family members prepared the wedding cake and food. Nicole said the weather was perfect. “It was a great day.”
On her first trip to Alaska, Linda Cleary of Saguenay, Quebec is in town visiting daughter Kim Habra. Linda’s adventures have included seeing granddaughter Alyx Habra perform at the State Solo & Ensemble Music Festival May 13. She was in Whitehorse, Y.T. for the May 1 earthquakes. She was planning trips to Skagway and Juneau.
Amateur genealogist Ken Lea of Juneau made a recent visit. Lea has been cataloguing the lives of Southeast Alaska Natives for about 40 years, starting when his Tsimshian wife Kathy Bowey walked down a street in Ketchikan, greeting her “cousins.” You can find his work by typing “Tlingit Haida Tsimshian Genealogy of Canada and Alaska” into a search engine. “Occasionally I hear from people who say, ‘You missed my Uncle Joe.’ Sometimes I need just one name to hook a family together,” Lea said. Haines High School track coach Keri Ewing will be in Belize City, Belize on a summer job starting in mid-June. He’s working for Global Leadership Adventures, a firm that combines recreation and service work for students from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Gennie Fenasse and Ian Macnab of Sydney, Australia visited Jane Pascoe this week. Gennie and Jane have been friends since primary school. Besides cruising Glacier Bay on a ship out of Juneau, the couple visited Chilkoot and Chilkat state parks and Rutzebeck Lake and were planning a 10-day visit to the Canadian Rockies.
Alisha Young graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. on April 29 with a bachelor’s degree in communications design. She’s back in town and working at Alaska Seaplanes. She said she’s also working freelance and will design your posters and wedding invitations. Shawna Hotch of Klukwan graduated from Fort Lewis College the same day, with a degree in public health and exercise science. Other recent college graduates include Riley Erekson, Colorado State University, bachelor’s degree in dietetics and nutrition management; Esther Bauer, University of Alaska-Southeast, bachelor of science and marine biology; Jackie St. Claire, UAS, bachelor of liberal arts and interdisciplinary studies; Elena Horner, University of Alaska-Fairbanks, associate’s degree in process technology and certificate in instrumentation. Alisha attended best friend Riley’s graduation in Fort Collins on May 12.
Marsha Warner reports Klukwan’s Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center resumed summer hours May 1. It’s open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. New this year is an exhibit of artifacts from the Kaagwaantan Brown Bear collection, including a box screen that is more than 400 years old. The village’s salmon camp is set for July 20-24. Call the heritage center, 767-5485, to register.
Jessica Edwards said volunteers are needed for the annual fishermen’s barbecue, Saturday, June 17 at Dalton City in the fairgrounds. Two volunteer slots are available, 4-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-9 p.m. Help is needed serving, running food and doing cleanup. Call 766-2476.

Serena Badgley competed in the 2017 National College Ultimate Frisbee Championship in Lexington, Ky., May 20-21. Badgley plays cutter, an offensive position, for the Valparaiso University team, which placed third of 16 teams for the Division III title. Badgley said the club sport is fun, but not well-known. “A lot of people don’t know about us at all, even on campus.”
