Jessica Kenny, a Brown University classmate of Tia Heywood, stopped in for a daylong visit last week. She was aboard the Star Princess cruise ship in Skagway with her parents and took a fast ferry to Haines. The pair saw Chilkoot Lake, hiked to Battery Point, visited the brewery and coached youth soccer. A graduate in development studies, Jessica lives in Curitiba, Brazil.

Alan and Jeannette Heinrich attended grandson Jacob Heinrich’s high school graduation in Frisco, Texas in early June. Commencement for the class of 550 students was held at The Ford Center, the 12,000-seat Dallas Cowboys training field. A football player, Jacob earned a scholarship to Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. Jacob is the son of Karl Heinrich. Karl’s brother Kurt Heinrich lives in Little Elm, Texas, about four miles away. Alan and Jeannette are hosting daughter Tara’s children, Amanda and Eric Fulton of Amherst, N.H. After a month here, Amanda, 13, and Eric, 10, will be taking a Windjammer cruise off Maine. “They’re going to have quite a summer,” Alan said.

Omar Cordes and Paul Nelson attended the John Fogerty concert June 28 at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome. Paul is on a month-long European vacation. Omar is an investment manager in Amsterdam.

Former resident Michele Fehlings is here from Hermann, Mo., for her first visit in almost 10 years. She’s visiting Margaret Sebens and other friends and said a highlight was going to 33 Mile for a burger. A big part of her visit was to spread Mick McCarter’s ashes near the Lutak home that she and Mick shared. Michele works as a pension analyst for the Missouri legislature in Jefferson City.

Jennifer Black is in town, visiting sister Ellen and Larry Larson. Jennifer attended the recent music camp in the Yukon with Haines residents including Sid Moffat, Johnny White, Jim Jurgeleit, Ellen Larson, Merrill Lowden and Marian Carlson.

Jenn Reid recently hosted a visit from sisters Gretchen Reid of Tupper Lake, N.Y. and Barbara Reid of Whitehorse, Y.T. Gretchen was here two weeks, and drove down from Whitehorse, where Barbara works as a teacher. “We went on a hike, we went rafting with Rainbow Glacier Adventures and we just hung out and visited,” Jenn said. The sisters grew up in Quebec.

Lupines, irises and fireweed were in bloom when Leslie Roussan and Larry Harris married at Chilkat State Park on Saturday, July 1. Tim Shields served as marriage commissioner for the service held near the walk-in campsites. Guests included three friends from Chugiak. A small reception followed at Tim and Kathy Holmes’ house on Mud Bay Road. The three-tiered Cambria Goodwin wedding cake included a bottom layer of chocolate cake with raspberry filling, middle layer of white cake with whipped lemon curd, and top layer of chocolate with chocolate ganache. The couple will divide their time between Alaska and Berkeley, Calif.

Joe and Sue Poor recently returned from Joe’s cataract and laser surgery in Chehalis, Wash. Making the trip to Haines with them were Joe’s brother Woody Poor and wife Bobbi, visiting from Valdese, N.C. Joe said he plans to inventory the status of the 37 apple trees he planted around Main Street and Fort Seward in May 2011. He estimates as many as 20 have survived. Contrary to speculation that moose would take out the saplings, snowplows have taken the biggest toll, he said.

Sally McGuire’s brother Dr. Bret Luick is in town,working on his sailboat Nordic Star at the harbor. Bret is an associate professor in nutrition at the University of Fairbanks who runs the Cooperative Extension’s monthly food cost survey.

The American Bald Eagle Foundation is getting sunglasses. Thanks to a $1,200 collections management grant from Museums Alaska, the foundation will be coating about 14 windows in the diorama cupola and near the entrance. Workers will add a coating to the inside of the windows to reduce 99 percent of ultraviolet rays.
