Mary Ann Price became a great grandma again on Jan. 11. Bobby Giovanni Ginn-Price, weighing 8 pounds, 11 ounces, was born to proud parents Bobby Price and Tara Ginn. He is the fifth grandchild to grandma Nadine Price. He joins his older sister Zhamirah Price and brother Mason Price who love him already.
A celebration of life for Pamela Hillary Long, who passed away in Cordova, will be at 2 p.m. on March 4 at the Haines Christian Center. A graveside service and potluck at the American Legion will follow. A full obituary will be published next week.
Haines School students participated in the iDida Statewide Technology Contest. First place winner in the 9-12 grade iDida photo contest was Marty Fowler who won for his “Eagle Trio” picture in the Life in Alaska category and also received the People’s Choice Award. Naomi Green won in the Enhanced Digital Image category for her picture of “Self Portrait.” Mark Davis took the top spot in the 9-12 grade iDida Tunes Entertain Us category for his original composition, “The Journey of the Jaguars,” a 30-track audio piece for which he wrote the music and played all of the instruments. In the K-4 iDida Podcast category Public Service Announcement, Emily McPhetres took first with her piece titled “H.A.R.K.” Each student in first place received $100, People’s Choice was an additional $250.
Anna and Jim Jurgeleit are back from a three-week trip. The two went to Seattle where Anna attended a ukulele workshop and concert by Cynthia Lin. They also attended a Curtis Salgado concert at the Triple Door, then spent a week in Tucson hiking, relaxing in the sun, and eating good food. They also attended the Tucson Gem Show and ate dinner with Jen Reid, Tresham Gregg, Audrey Smith, Dennis Geason, and Deborah Marshall.
Thirteen students graduated from an Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) course last week. Among them was dispatch supervisor, Celeste Grimes, Police Chief, Heath Scott and Klehini Valley Volunteer Fire Department Chief, John Terenzi. “The ETT course creates first responders that are trained to deal with basic life-threatening emergencies until the patient is transferred to more advanced providers,” said head instructor Jenn Walsh. Assistant instructors Tim Holm, CJ Jones, Al Badgley, Darwin Feakes and Zach Tarleton also helped with the 40-hour course.
Assistant Vice President of First National Bank of Alaska and outgoing Haines Loan Officer Kyle Gray was recently awarded the 2018 Alaska Journal of Commerce “Top 40 Under 40” award. An awards dinner in Anchorage is scheduled for the winners April 27.
Haines High School senior Keegan Palmieri won the Alaska Society for Technology in Education’s High School Student of the Year award. “He was quite surprised he had won the award after I put him to work setting up and taking down the media equipment, helping the network administration and doing general technical support for the conference,” said Haines High School staff and ASTE board member Sam McPhetres. “Keegan has been one of my tech minions for the past three years.” Keegan plans to attend University of Alaska Fairbanks next year.
Margaret H. Piggott attended a wedding in Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park, B.C. on Feb. 10. Margaret’s great nephew Matthew Hicks, son of Diana Piggott-Hicks and Bart Hicks of Calgary, married Adrienne Tollis. Margaret said it was a simple wedding with a small bridal party. Margaret’s brother Michael and wife Norma Piggott were at the wedding with their two nephews, Stephen and Andrew, and their wives Deirdre and Hiroko. Five great nephews, Sebastian, Tim, Paul, Christopher and Alex Piggott were also in attendance. The younger Piggott clan went downhill skiing at Lake Louise, Banff after the wedding in -32 degrees Celsius temperatures.
John and Sharon Svenson’s artwork will be featured at Annie Kails’ First Friday display in Juneau. The Svensons have about 12 pieces displayed.
Hayden Jimenez was the solo Haines representative for a wrestling competition in Juneau. Hayden’s mom Sierra Jimenez said Hayden was undefeated until the winner of the loser’s bracket fought his way into the championship match. The underdog defeated Hayden in a double elimination match. Hayden had defeated the wrestler in an earlier match and the pair squared off in a third round where they tied. “Hayden won with a double leg take down at sudden death,” Sierra said. “It was intense.”
