Darcie Cairn Reeves was born to Hannah Blilie and Ray Reeves on May 17 at 10:56 a.m. in Juneau. Darcie weighed 6 lbs and was 18 and three-quarter inches long. Darcie joins big sister Charlie Katzeek. The family is home and doing well.

Haines Borough Police Sergeant Josh Dryden and Officer Chris Brown completed the Memorial Day Murph Challenge which honors Navy SEAL Lieutenant Micheal Murphy who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. The workout which includes a 1-mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups and 300 unweighted squats, followed by another 1-mile run. This workout is one of the most popular to honor the fallen over the long weekend.

The Haines Homebrew and Craft Beer Festival kicked off right with its annual brewer’s dinner Friday featuring chef Travis Kukull who included many Alaska grown foods including fiddlehead puree and wild celery from Battery Point. His kitchen volunteers included Leah WagnerJenna KunzeAlixanne GoodmanTracey Wirak Marley HornerCaroline Hankins and JD Johnson. Servers for the dinner included Mackey Cassidy, Sierra Jimenez, Alissa Henry, Marie Boisvert, Beth Bolander, Rigel Falvey, Sara Chapell, Krystal Norberg, Marnie Hartman, Rachel Saitzyk, Lizi Wirak, Meredith Pochardt, Candace Haagensen, and Lexie DeWitt. The dinner was hosted by Tara Bicknell, her first emcee job at the dinner, and while over 250 sipped on the 11 featured brews poured from tap by Courtney Culbeck, Russ Lyman, Spencer Douthit, it proved to be another success.

Many came from all over the country to attend Beer Fest including Reed Brown of Seattle and John Wainwright of New York City. The two went to college at Oregon State with Harry Rietze. They enjoyed checking crab pots, whale watching and touring Haines.

Ketch and Libby Jacobson completed a 10-day 100-ton captain’s course in Montavilla, Oregon recently. “We were tested on navigation, rules of the road, deck general safety,” said Libby. There were 13 people in the class and the brother and sister were quick to pick up on everything as they have spent most of their summers on their parents’, Glen and Allison Jacobson, boat the Fjordland. The siblings enjoyed some free time after the class and went to the coast and visited Astoria and Cannon Beach. They also watched a Portland Trailblazers game on the big screen at the Moda Center and hiked the Columbia River Gorge. They will soon be certified as they will send their required materials into the Coast Guard for completion.

Melissa Ganey and Teri Podsiki have just returned from Indiana for her cousins Kevin Orris marriage to Sam Cralli. “Highlights were seeing family and being a party of the wedding festivities,” said Melissa. The trip also wouldn’t have been complete without their traditional Target shopping dress up spree.

Jan and Ralph Borders celebrated their six-month wedding anniversary in Juneau on May 24, three days after Jan’s birthday. They met in Mount Vernon, Washington last August and got married two days after Thanksgiving. Ralph also became a stepdad to Jan’s three children, ErikLars and Ingrid, and a grandpa to seven grandchildren.

Bryan Combs was on a mining team that broke the world record for the longest diameter raises at the Stillwater Mine in Montana. “They were underground and drilling up 2,650 feet in two separate tunnels and punching through the mountain for ventilation,” said his wife Kaitlin Combs.

The Haines Borough Library had its annual summer reading program kick-off party on Friday. Children watched Seattle based magician Louie Foxx. After his performance, the annual march around the library commenced before they ate snacks and pizza. The theme this year is a “Universe of Stories” and children are encouraged to read books for weekly prizes from the treasure chest. Holly Davis organizes the program.
