Elizabeth and David Krout and 5-year-old daughter Amelia of Seattle, Washington welcomed baby Adeline Irene Krout to their family on June 5. Grandmother Barbara Pardee (Nana B) spent most of June with the family. Adding to the excitement was the birth of Darcy Virginia Grace Hibbard to Josh and Nichol Hibbard of Ellensburg, Washington on Sept. 2. Once again, Barbara was called back to Washington for more quality time with the newborn grandchild and family. 

Sisters Christine Loverink and Kelly Reed, along with Kelly’s son Alden Reed and dog Kiva, visited parents Vince and Jansy Hansen from their homes in Juneau. Christine reported they spent most of the time visiting on their parents’ sunny porch. They enjoyed a Port Chilkoot Distillery visit, walks in the woods, and a skiff adventure in Lutak Inlet. The group also visited with grandfather Glen Mielke in his yard and attended Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. 

Anna Jacobson met up with her parents Glen and Alison Jacobson and dog Leo at their cabin on the Gallatin River outside of Bozeman, Montana. The group went on a four-day backpacking trip near Red Lodge, Montana that included fly fishing and swimming in alpine lakes. Glen and Alison rented out their Haines home and left town for the winter. The pandemic and subsequent Canadian border closure resulted in a poor season for their business Alaska Fjordlines. Anna lives in Santa Barbara, California with her fiancé Chris Naughton on their sailboat. 

Juge Gregg and his daughter Cooper Gregg visited Juge’s father, Tresham Gregg, in Haines for two weeks. They enjoyed seeing friends and family including aunt Annette Smith, fishing, and helping with the Seawolf Gallery reconstruction.  Juge and his family recently moved to Seattle, Washington after he became an attorney for Amazon. The family formerly lived in Washington, D.C. where Juge worked for the Justice Department. 

Siblings Nels Lynch, Summer Lynch, Teolani Baker, and Keanu Lynch had a great visit from their older sister Darlin Sanchez. Darlin stayed with her mother Holly Irwin and spent time with all her nieces and nephews: Lani, Silvia, Teddy, Lila, Teal and Sawyer. Darlin caught up with old Haines friends and appreciated a break from the hot weather. Darlin lives in Yuba City, California with her husband Dusty and 9-year-old son, Hawk.

Dr. Robyn Barlow visited her mother Linnus Danner. She has enjoyed visiting with local friends including Keri Eggelston. Robyn lives in Chico, California and owns Chico Naturopathic Medicine. She was relieved to be in Haines last week enjoying the clear air and sunny September weather as Chico is experiencing unhealthy air quality due to the California wildfires. 

Patty Campbell made and donated about 20 masks to kindergarten and Headstart students. She said Becky Nash generously provided her with the fabric. She has additional masks for sale in her Radio Shack store for $5 each. 

Haines Headstart opened up their doors on Sept. 1. They are at full capacity with 17 students. Ten students are in-person while seven are virtual learners. Lead teacher Tiffany DeWitt reports they are fully staffed this year. Staff include: Andrea Ferrin, Elisa Brooks, Patricia Faverty, and Joselin Williams. Operating hours are shortened due to COVID-19 standards, 8 a.m.- 12 p.m., four days a week.  

Chilkat Valley Preschool had their first day of school on Sept. 14. They have two new teachers: Riley Harrison and Jessie Adams-Weinert. CVP currently has six boys enrolled at CVP. They have space for four more children as their COVID-19 capacity is 10 students. Their operating hours are 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m., four days a week.
