Cade Clay married Trinity JoAnne Davis in Phoenix, Arizona on Feb. 5. They were surrounded by close family and friends including Cade’s parents Robert and Yvette Clay of Haines and Trinity’s parents Charles and Tiffany Davis of Petersburg. Hudson Sage was also in attendance at the wedding.

Jean Smith organized an estate sale on Feb. 4 at her home in Sun City, Arizona for Hospice of Haines. She raised $2,345 for Hospice. Jean reports she organizes an estate sale once a year to raise money for the local organization. Jean started taking valuable items from the annual Hospice of Haines rummage sale and other items she found at estate sales to Keith Mueller of Phoenix who paid her for the goods. The first time she approached him, she asked him to write the check out directly to Hospice of Haines. Keith and Jean started talking and he explained he had an old antique shop in Scottsdale that went out of business in the 90s. He offered some items from there for Jean to sell for the Haines organization. “Keith drops off about three to four crates a year, my neighbors donate items and Ann Quinlan sold her Arizona home and donated items from her estate too,” Smith said. “My garage is full of items, once a year I open it up and sell it all for Hospice of Haines.”

Hospice of Haines Director and Volunteer Coordinator Shannon McPhetres said, “We are ever so grateful for Jean and all her support.” Teresa Hura’s son, Tony Linderman, with his wife Angela and their daughter Grace, also attended the sale. Jean and Ron Smith will be back in Haines in April as they continue to split their time between Haines and Sun City.

Nancy Nash recently took advantage of virtual learning when she added a specialty endorsement to her Basic Zumba teaching certification from her home. She is now qualified to teach Zumba Toning, which uses specialty padded hand-held light weights in fitness dance routines.  Her initial training, with the same instructor, involved travelling to Washington state and joining a class of 40.  The online training, with only four participants, was much more personal and in-depth. Nancy hopes to resume teaching in late spring.

Hockey players are taking advantage of the cold weather. Last weekend there were kids and adult games on Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds ice rink. All week players braved the cold and showed up for games at 4:30 p.m. Teams and the number of players on the ice are determined by who shows up. Some players wear a combination of hockey padding while others skate in their normal winter wear. All skill levels are welcome to join the pond hockey style games.
