It was great to see gillnet recycling featured on last week’s front page. I want to acknowledge my net mentor Mark Carroll, pictured in the photo but not named, who has diverted hundreds of pounds of tired old nets from the landfill by taking the time to strip nets properly. I appreciate all fishermen who do this, also.
I especially want to thank Molly Sturdevant, the force of nature behind net recycling at HFR. She has devoted countless hours of volunteer time getting our net recycling program up and running. Through her efforts, the Haines fleet’s dead nets can join reincarnated nets from all over coastal Alaska in their new lives as rain gear and more.
