A pilot was seriously injured after a plane crash in Excursion Inlet on Sunday evening.

According to a release from the U.S. Coast Guard, the pilot was the only person in the plane. A Coast Guard helicopter left Sitka around 5:30 p.m. Sunday to respond to the last known location of the emergency locator beacon, and found the wreckage at around 7 p.m. on a alpine hillside. The Coast Guard dropped a rescuer who “extracted the survivor from the crash.”

The pilot hasn’t been named, but the plane, a Piper Super Cub, is registered to an owner in Juneau. Clint Johnson, a spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, said

The Coast Guard reported the pilot was in critical condition.

Johnson said on Thursday the owner of the plane was working on a recovering the wreckage, but efforts have been hampered by rainy weather.

A preliminary accident report will be released within 15 days, as per NTSB protocols.
