Superintendent Roy Getchell told the school board members the district had mixed results in some of its self-imposed strategic goals over the past year. On one hand, the district exceeded its goal of having 90% of parents rate communication with the district as satisfactory. In a survey sent to parents earlier this year, 95% of parents rated communication as satisfactory. But the district fell well short of its goal of retaining 90% of staff members year-to-year. This school year, the district only kept 79%. Getchell told board members there were a lot of factors in this year’s low teacher retention, including retirements and life changes. Getchell said the district hadn’t broken down the reasons for staff leaving, but “we probably should.” He said he hoped this year “is a one-off.”

Getchell told board members that the district is still recruiting for someone to supervise open gym. So far, three applications have been picked up, and one has been returned.

Selby Long introduced herself to board members as the student representative. Long said she’s been involved with state issues on the student level as part of the Alaska Student Government Association. It’s the junior’s first year as student representative at the local level.
