In a recent news report, KHNS wrote that I said “much of the ill will came from pro-development people, who blamed him for destroying goodwill that had taken years to build.”

I didn’t say this, nor did I allude to it. I commented that a March 24 meeting I facilitated negatively affected everyone, but the actual damage was to the pro-development interests. People have espoused that this meeting was a secret attempt to cater to mining. In reality, this meeting destroyed years of goodwill and public relations from that industry.

The groups most negatively affected in that meeting were all trying with integrity to address a huge liability, repair our lifeline for fuel and groceries, and protect our current service providers. The groups most positively affected by that meeting were conservationists who got exactly what they needed to make the dock rebuild entirely about ore, therefore feeding a compelling narrative.

This misquote greatly grieves me since these “pro-development people” were the ones who covered me in public meetings, took responsibility for what they didn’t do, and then thanked me for my efforts to help Haines. These true leaders have spent a year and a half being misunderstood, shamed, etc. yet have shown great kindness to me, the troublemaker.
