Leo Randal Nash was born 2:27 a.m. on Nov. 17 at Riverbend Hospital in Springfield, Ore., to parents Emma and Carl Nash. Leo weighed 8 pounds, 2.4 ounces and measured 20.75 inches. Grandparents are Dwight and Nancy Nash of Haines, Randy McDonald of Haines and Marie McDonald of Eugene, Ore. Leo is Dwight and Nancy’s first grandchild. Aunts and uncles include Bryan McDonald, Abbie McDonald, and Mae Belle McDonald, Nori Nash, Adrian Nash and Amelia Nash. Dwight and Nancy are planning a trip soon to see their grandson.
Kristy Legassie and Darren Schweinefus are new parents of Hazel Dawn Schweinefus, born 4:55 a.m. Nov. 9 at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. Hazel weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 20.5 inches. Kristy’s parents, Bob and Kathy Legassie of Laconia, N.H., attended the birth. The family is home in Haines.
Rodney and Rhonda Hinson are again collecting holiday cards and letters to send to Haines members of the military; this year’s correspondence will be sent to the Alaska Coast Guard. Items can be dropped off at Alaska Rod’s at Second and Main, until Dec. 11. Call 766-2352.
Klukwan School graduate Danielle Dallmann, currently enrolled at the University of Alaska’s Juneau campus, is a winner of the university’s myTRACK photo contest. Danielle posted the winning self-portrait to UA’s Facebook site, indicating with her fingers how many years it will take her to graduate. Danielle will use her prize, two round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines, for travel to Hawaii.
Haines High graduate Parker Schnabel is featured on the Nov. 10 cover of Millennial magazine, a publication directed at people born in the 1980s and 1990s. The cover and enclosed article describe Parker as a reality TV star, and as the principal actor in the Discovery Channel’s mining show “Gold Rush.” It credits Parker with preserving grandfather John Schnabel’s mining legacy. “Gold Rush” is currently rated #1 among male audiences on Friday nights.
Fran Tuenge reports that two dozen Friends of the Library and other community volunteers spent about five hours last Saturday dressing the library in its annual holiday finery. Among volunteers were Burl Sheldon, of Haines Big Brothers Big Sisters, and six pairs of Littles and Bigs who also decorated the children’s room.
The Juneau Empire recently featured artist Sarah Bishop in an article about the upcoming Juneau Public Market, held annually on Thanksgiving weekend. Sarah’s parents, Gershon and Kerry Cohen, were among the first vendors at the Public Market in 1983. Sarah will be offering her handcrafted pillow covers, as well as a selection of goods from other Haines artists including Kelly Williams, Merrick Bochart, Coral Lani, Amelia Nash, Genny Rietz and Kerry Cohen.
Ann Myren and Tim McDonough spent a month housesitting for friends on Hawaii’s Big Island. They stayed on the western side of the island, managing to bypass two natural disasters: the lava flow on the east side, and the offshore storm that became Hurricane Ana. Tom and Liz Heywood, making their first trip to the Big Island, visited them.
Alissa and Ira Henry celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with a week in Las Vegas. They enjoyed entertainment in town as well as outings in the Mojave Desert. While waiting to enter a Cirque du Soleil show, they ran into Haines grads Garrett Phillips and Amanda Smalley, who were traveling through on a road trip that will eventually take them to Florida, where they plan to live. Alissa’s mother, Sue Green of Denver, Colo., stayed in Haines with the couple’s two children, Dalton and Makayla.
Dick and Carol Flegel are in Seattle while Dick recovers from unexpected heart surgery. Chest pain led to a quick trip to Seattle, then surgery to repair a 12-inch tear in the inner layer of Dick’s aorta. Dick credits his life to God and his surgeon. Dick and Carol will travel to San Francisco for a long recovery and to see son Michael and dauhter-in-law Lauren Wang, and grandson Ryan Flegel.
