I would like to thank the Haines Borough Police Department for doing an outstanding job intercepting drugs coming to Haines. What makes their job a little easier is that drug dealers only have two ways to get drugs here: the ferry or the airport. Their job may now be a bit harder because we have two airports: one in town and at Chilkat Lake Road. I do not know if police will stick to town or be allowed to monitor the situation here at the edge of civilization. Gas and manpower could be an issue. The $57,000 spent on brush-cutting may have helped. With the help of the borough manager, planning commission and assembly, we now have a heliport as well. Hopefully, drugs will not come through the airport out the road, but local police and border guards should be aware for the potential for it. It seems the borough makes decisions that come back to bite them.
