The Haines School hosted a Spring Art Show reception last Friday. Paintings, drawings and ceramics from all grade levels were displayed on the walls and tables for parents and residents to see. The show featured some of the All State winning ceramic pieces from high school students, including Seth McClurg’s “Kyusu Tea Set,” and Lucia Chapell’s “Topography Bowls.” The artwork will be on display in the elementary and middle school wings of the school throughout the rest of next week.
Kayley Swinton is graduating from Pacific University on Saturday with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. She has been working towards this degree for the past seven years. Her parents, Ralph and Sarah Swinton, are in Hillsboro, Oregon this weekend to watch her graduate. She plans to move to Three Forks, Montana, after graduation to begin a job search.
Kristen White’s third grade students are hatching chicks. They currently have 18 chicks and counting. This is White’s tenth year hatching chicks in the classroom. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, she ran a virtual hatch for the students. Students from all grade levels come to visit the chicks, which has come to symbolize an exciting sign of spring at Haines Elementary School.
Chris and Lindsey Dixon are currently in the process of reopening Dejon Delights for the summer. They hope to be open by the end of the month. A planned sale of the business to John Upton last August never materialized.
Jordan Baumgartner’s sixth-grade class is back from their trip around the Golden Circle, a ferry and highway route between Haines, Whitehorse and Skagway. Highlights from the trip included a visit to the Whitehorse Lions Aquatic Center, a hike along the Rock Glacier Trail in the Kluane National Park and Reserve, a tour of the Da Ku Cultural Center in Haines Junction, and a jump off the giant dunes at the Carcross Sand Dune Desert. Students also met up with fellow middle schoolers from Carcross to learn traditional First Nation games. Chaperones, including Jordan Baumgartner, Vanessa Salmon, Jennifer Marschke, Jessica Swaner, Matthew Hunter, Geoffrey Nelson and Josh Dryden, reported having as much fun as the kids on the three-day excursion. Tracy Getchell’s fourth-grade class will leave for their Golden Circle trip this week.
Peterson’s Pretzels will open its new location for the summer Wednesday. The pretzel truck is now located across from the Quick Shop and the Post Office. Owner Chris Peterson thanked Haynes Tormey and Delta Western for clearing space for the food truck. There is now plenty of space for parking, as well as a beautiful view. The food truck will begin operating with a limited menu due to limited supplies. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
