I have lived in Haines for twenty-seven years. One of the most amazing things about living here for me has been that for the first time in my life I finally felt comfortable being myself and knowing that I belonged here precisely because of my uniqueness. When folks from the lower 48 ask me what’s so great about Alaska, I tell them that here you get to be whoever you are, no questions asked. I am deeply saddened to realize that apparently this doesn’t apply to everyone.
I was raised a Christian but long ago gave up organized religion in any form. What I never gave up though was believing that whatever the question, love is the answer. Love of our earth. Love of our neighbors whatever the color of their skin, whatever their gender, whatever their fashion choices. To the LGBTQ community here in Haines and everywhere, I support you, I stand by you, and I am sorry for any grief that has been directed your way.
Monocultures in nature do not exist. Not only is diversity a requirement of a healthy ecosystem, but it is also what makes our world such a beautiful place to live. For the record, I welcome our neighbors, Juneau Drag, and am very much looking forward to the colorfulness, joy, and diversity they are bringing to the Fair this year.
